Teri Franta is a visual artist from Southern California. Her vibrant pop-art style fuses her passion for photography and digital mixed media with her love of all things iconic and ironic.
After graduating from the University of Southern California with a degree in Journalism, Franta enjoyed an award-winning career in the wonderful and exacting world of advertising. A few years back, she set her “exacting” hat aside and set out on a new path where unique is always better than perfect...and coloring outside the lines is encouraged.
Franta credits her combined experience as a photographer, storyteller, graphic artist and creative director for her distinct style. Whether she painstakingly stages a scene from her vast collection of pop culture toys, mannequins and memorabilia, or captures something interesting that enters her airspace, her process is all her own. Her work is fresh and timely, yet nostalgically familiar. That’s her way of paying tribute to all those who inspired her love of pop art and gave her the courage to follow her own path wherever the colors (and lens, and pixels) may lead.
When asked about her unique style, Franta responds that she just thinks of herself as a teller of stories: Your story, his story, her story and their story...and she is constantly experimenting to get it right. Where she goes next depends entirely on the stories she needs to tell and the observations that hit her radar.

When I was five years old I won a collage contest and my mother predicted I would be an artist some day. After I won an essay contest in the sixth grade, she said I would be a writer some day. Pressed to choose between the two in college, and heavily influenced by an elementary school teacher who harshly told me that my collages and finger-painting were not really art, I followed the words and studied print and broadcast journalism at U.S.C.
Luckily, my degree included classes in video production, photography, advertising, marketing and public relations. So there I was creating collages again. They were just a lot more technical in nature.
Eventually, after an enlightening (and extremely lean) year working and studying Spanish and art history in Spain, I completed my Bachelor of Arts program in Los Angeles. When I realized journalism wasn't going to bring in enough money to pay off my student loans, I gravitated into marketing and advertising. I wrote, designed, created, photographed, produced and directed many projects to my clients' content, while my heart longed for more unstructured and less commercial pastures.
I still remember in vivid and glorious color the precise moment I took my first bite out of the Macintosh Apple — and the tiny little amazing pixels that exploded onto the screen, just waiting to go exploring with me. It was love at first bite. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
In retrospect, my mother was right about both the writer and artist thing. However, I've always just thought of myself as a teller of stories. I think they have a name for that now...and a college major. Storytelling 101 anyone?
